Fire crews called to gyrocopter crash at airfield

Fire crews from across Suffolk were mobilised to a light aircraft crash just outside Beccles earlier this morning.

Appliances were sent from Woodbridge, Princes Street, Leiston, Beccles, Bungay, North Lowestoft and Lowestoft South were sent to the incident at Beccles Airfield in Ellough just after 10.30am today, Tuesday 10th August.

The aircraft reportedly crashed on take-off causing injuries to the pilot, the extent of which are yet not known.

An ambulance was also sent to the scene along with two rapid response cars and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Appliances from Bungay, Beccles and Lowestoft South booked in attendance and advised that no further assistance was required. Other fire appliances en route were subsequently stood down.

The pilot of the gyrocopter was subsequently transported to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital by air ambulance.

Firefighters supported those at the scene with stabilisation of the aircraft.
