Culford school boys claim national tennis championship

Culford boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the LTA Youth Schools National Championships Finals with the boys’ team taking the trophy.

Senior School pupil Gregor, led the boys’ team as their Captain. He was voted the number one seed of the competition, alongside other team members Ralph, Zach, Luca and Jago.

Culford Tennis Coach Mr Chris Johnson, explains: ‘’Each match consisted of four singles and two doubles matches. If the match was 3-3 in rubbers, then it would be decided by a ‘match shootout’ which is a 10 point tiebreak with a player from each of the doubles pairings.’’

”The boys got off to a flying start with a 6-0 win over Altrincham School in the quarter finals, with only one of the matches being close. Ralph kept his nerve to come through 11-9 in the deciding match tie break to win his singles”, he said.

They continued on to play Reeds in the semi finals, previous winners of the competition. Luca and Zach both played extremely well, with Zach winning the deciding match tiebreak 10-4.

Mr Johnson continues, ”going into the doubles, it was 2-2 in rubbers and with both teams winning a doubles each, it was time for a match shootout – one doubles tie break to 10 points to decide who would go through to the final.”

Zach and Gregor were the two selected and they showed great passion and determination to win through in what was some very exciting tennis to make the final.

The final match was a skillful and exciting game of tennis from both parties. The final score of 2-2 meant the Championship title would rest on a second consecutive match shootout. Gregor and Zach played again, taking the win and the trophy.

This is Culford boys’ second win of the Championship title in the four years of the competition running.
